Energy drinks alone may be, for you, a fantastic way to get through your day, but combine it with alcohol and you’ve got one dangerous mix.
A new study conducted by Cecile Marczinski, a psychologist at Northern Kentucky University, and published in Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, showed that individuals who consumed energy drinks with alcohol were less likely to recognize the signs of having consumed too much alcohol. Instead, their bodies showed twice as much stimulation as drinking alcohol alone.
“Obviously, we have tremendous concern for excessive drinking,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside
Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “We also have tremendous concern for mixing energy drinks with alcoholic beverages because, as this study shows, it can be incredibly dangerous. The human body possesses a “checks and balances” system, of sorts. When you drink too much, your body responds with lethargy. When overstimulation from the energy drinks occurs, your body’s “checks and balances” are thrown off, and the tiredness that comes from drinking too much doesn’t kick in, making you think that you’re really not impaired. And that’s when the real problems can arise, such as driving in that state. It’s important to understand the side effects and risks that come from combining alcohol with other substances.”
In Marczinski’s study, she found it interesting to note that caffeine doesn’t seem to be the culprit for producing such effects. Rather, it’s the additional ingredients such as taurine, glucose and ginseng which seem to cause the effects.
