High School Proms usher in season of increased underage drinking

Caution urged for prom season

What should be a time for celebration for the end of an academic year often times becomes an unthinkable tragedy in the lives of many teens due to underage drinking at high school proms.

“May and June is the time for proms in many communities and with that comes underage drinking,” begins a spokesperson for Mountainside Drug Rehab and Alcohol Treatment Center. “We’ve put together a list of tips to help parents prevent their child from drinking on prom night, and it’s our hope that parents will use these tips as a means for opening up communication about underage drinking.”

  1. Make certain that you know your teen’s plans for the evening.
  2. Be straightforward and explain to your teen the dangers of underage drinking and present them with statistics illustrating those dangers.
  3. Make certain that the school will be serving food at the prom.
  4. Know who is responsible for driving and, if a limo is rented, make certain you know the company’s policy on alcohol.
  5. If you have alcohol in your home, make certain that you know how much you have as well as what you have. Secure it as a precautionary measure.
  6. Know where all of the hottest teen congregation spots are located.
  7. Establish and clearly communicate the consequences for violating underage drinking rules.

Statistics show that nearly 25 percent of drivers aged 16-20 who were involved in automobile accidents had been engaged in drinking. About one in three high school students say that they have ridden in a vehicle with a teenage driver who had been drinking. In addition, one in 10 high school students have admitted to driving after drinking alcoholic beverages.
