Kellogg has issued a recall for all peanut butter crackers
sold under the Austin and Keebler brands for fear that the peanut butter paste
is contaminated with salmonella.
The Kellogg recall follows a peanut butter recall by Lynchburg-based
Peanut Corp. of America, a company that sells bulk supplies to institutions,
food service industries and private food label food companies (including
Kellogg). The company recalled 21 lots of peanut butter sold under the brands
Parnell’s Pride and King Nut, and made since July 1 at its plant in Blakely,
Georgia because of salmonella contamination. None of the recalled products are
sold in retail stores.
Kellogg said it hasn’t found any problems with the
cracker products but are “taking these voluntary actions out of an abundance of
caution.”
Kellogg's recalled products include Austin and Keebler
toasted peanut butter sandwich crackers, peanut butter and jelly sandwich
crackers, cheese and peanut butter sandwich crackers, and peanut
butter-chocolate sandwich crackers.
Consumers are asked to keep the products, but not eat
them, until an investigation is complete.
At least two deaths have been linked to the salmonella outbreak.
More than 430 people have fallen ill.
