Islamists
insurgents now control most of Mogadishu, taking over six bases formerly
occupied by Ethiopian troops who had protected Somalia’s capital city from the
militants.
Fears
that a power vacuum would open once the Ethiopian troops left Mogadishu are
quickly being realized as troops loyal to the government now only hold two
bases and are facing Islamists insurgents from differing factions.
While
the insurgents, who now occupy the six bases, appear to be from different
factions they seem to be working together in an effort to gain complete control
of Mogadishu. Whether they continue to work together is yet to be seen. Many
believe the different factions will fight for ultimate control of the city.
African
Union peacekeepers are currently guarding the presidential palace but they have
already said they would need more numbers to prevent hardline groups opposed to
peace from attacking.
