Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford announced Wednesday that he is returning to school for his redshirt junior season.
Bradford, the 2008 Heisman Trophy winner, was expected to be a top five pick in the 2009 NFL Draft and was considered by many to be the top quarterback in the draft.
Bradford will be joined by fellow All-American teammate tight end Jermaine Gresham and offensive lineman Trent Williams, who have both decided to return to OU. Gresham was considered a first-round pick and the top tight end in the draft. OU teammate Gerald McCoy announced last week that he is returning as well, despite being considered the top defensive tackle in the draft.
Bradford continues a surprising streak of top-notch players returning to school. Texas quarterback Colt McCoy and Florida quarterback Tim Tebow, the remaining finalists for this year's Heisman Trophy, have all decided to return to school. USC safety Taylor Mays will also return to school. He was considered the top safety in the NFL draft, according to several NFL mock drafts.
Tebow helped to lead his Gators against Bradford's Sooners in a 24-14 win in the BCS National Championship Game.
This year, Bradford threw for 4,721 yards, 50 touchdowns and just eight interceptions on his way to the Heisman Trophy. He was named an AP First Team All-American and First Team All-Big 12.
The deadline for underclassmen (juniors and redshirt sophomores) to declare for the 2009 NFL Draft is Thursday, Jan. 15. Several top players have already declared for the draft, such as Texas Tech wide receiver Michael Crabtree, Missouri wide receiver Jeremy Maclin, Ohio State running back Chris "Beanie" Wells, Georgia quarterback Matthew Stafford and running back Knowshon Moreno.
