Death Toll from Indonesian Ferry Could Top 300

The death toll from last weekend’s ferry sinking in Indonesia could be much higher than first anticipated as more than 100 people not listed on the ship’s manifest may have been aboard.

According to that manifest there were 267 people listed on the ship and thus far only 35 survivors have been found. The ferry was flipped by heavy seas off Sulawesi Island on Sunday, leaving passengers little time to react and free themselves.

The Teratai Prima was traveling overnight and many passengers had been sleeping when it flipped. Survivors had to swim throughout the night or cling to rafts before being found by fishermen and rescuers.
