Derrick Favors, the nation's top high school basketball center, committed to the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets during an ESPNU press conference Wednesday night.
Favors, the 6-foot-9, 230-pound center from Atlanta's South Atlanta H.S., selected Paul Hewitt and Georgia Tech over Georgia and N.C. State.
Favors is currently ranked No. 1 in the nation by Scout.com, No. 2 by Hoop Scoop and ESPN, and No. 4 by Rivals.com. His down-low dominance, athleticism and hometown have caused him to draw comparisons to Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.
Favors joins four-star prospects Kammeon Holsey, Glen Rice (son of the former NBA All-Star Glen Rice) and Mfon Udofia along with Rivals150 three-star prospect Brian Oliver, all of which have committed to GT. His commitment will boost Georgia Tech in the top five of all recruiting classes for 2009.
On Thursday night, Favors will lead his South Atlanta team against fellow All-American DeMarcus Cousins and his LeFlore (AL) team on ESPN at 9pm. Favors and Cousins are considered the top two post players in the class of 2009 and locks to be named to the McDonald's All-American Game.
Favors is averaging over 28 points, 12 rebounds and 4 blocked shots for South Atlanta (14-1), which is ranked No. 1 in Georgia's Class AAA, according to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
