Tsunami Warning Follows Strong Earthquake Off Russian Coast

A 7.3-magnitude earthquake off Russia’s eastern coast near the Kuril Islands and now the country has issued a tsunami warning for the coastal city of Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky.

The earthquake’s epicenter was about 35km deep and 428 km south of Severo-Kuril’sk in the Kuril Islands, a chain of sparsely populated islands that has been at the center of a disagreement between Russia and Japan.

Russia has controlled the islands for several decades but Japan has maintained that the territory belongs to them.
