A new San Diego golf tournament, the U.S. Putting Tour Championship, scheduled to take place in late September, is attracting golfers from around the country, including a mix of amateurs and professionals.
Billed as the national championship of putting, the weeklong event is open to all golfers, male and female over the age of 12. Golfers can enter the tournament directly or attempt to qualify in one of several qualifying events being set up across the country this summer.
"With it being a late September tournament in San Diego golfers from around the country are looking at the championship both as a great golf competition and a golf vacation," said U.S. Putting Tour president, Jim Hartley. "We're offering golfers special golf and hotel rates, which lets golfers from all parts of the U.S. combine the USPT Championship with a fun time in San Diego."
The USPT Championship is being held at The Crossings in Carlsbad, one of the premier
San Diego golf destinations. The Crossings features 18 championship holes with spectacular ocean views amid the rolling hills of coastal north county San Diego. The Crossings' beautiful clubhouse serves as a backdrop for the USPT Championship, which will be held on the large, two-tiered practice putting green.
Carlsbad has long been recognized as a popular
Southern California golf hot spot with such well-known locations as La Costa Resort & Spa and Aviara Resort. In addition, many of the leading companies in the golf equipment industry, including TaylorMade and Callaway Golf, are headquartered in Carlsbad.
The format of the
putting championship can accommodate several hundred golfers over the week of competition. Golfers will play a 72-hole round of putting on one day. This round takes about two hours to complete, leaving each participant with free time to play a round of golf. Competitors who make the cut after the first round will play again on Sunday, October 2, being billed as Championship Sunday.
