US Airways Plane Crashes Into Hudson River

A US Airways plane crashed into the Hudson River of Thursday after a failed takeoff from LaGuardia Airport.

Flight 1549, an Airbus A320, took off Thursday afternoon and was only in the air for about three minutes before it went down. Just before the plane dropped the pilot radioed air traffic control and said he experienced a bird strike. A bird strike is when a bird or flock of birds is sucked into the jet engine.

Passenger Alberto Panero says the plane stayed afloat and everyone was able to get onto a raft. “It’s just incredible now that everyone’s still alive,” he said.

It has been reported by local TV stations that the aircraft was carrying 146 passengers and 5 crew members. No injuries or deaths have been reports.

The U.S. Coast Guard responded to the accident.
