Less
than one day after U.S. Airways Flight 1549 crashed into the Hudson River in
New York the city’s Mayor Michael Bloomberg is hailing the pilot and his crew
as heroes and honoring the rapid response by ferries and rescue crews that
ensured no loss of life.
Bloomberg
will be presenting Captain Chesley Sullenberger and his crew keys to the city
for their ability to ensure all 155 passengers were able to exit the Airbus
A320 while the plane sat wings-level in the Hudson River.
Sullenberger
has told investigators that the Flight 1549 was brought down by birds flying
into the engines shortly after it left LaGuardia Airport in NY en route to
Charlotte. With both engines out Sullenberger was forced to bring the plane
down in the river.
After
hitting the Hudson River first responders quickly descended on the fallen plane
and rescued passengers who had been standing on the wings of the plane, trying
to avoid the freezing water.
