Kenya’s
President Mwai Kibaki has appealed to international donors for $406 million to
provide relief for the country’s food crisis.
That
food crisis was brought on by a severe drought and post-election violence. While
the drought cost farmers their planted crop the post-election violence
prevented many farmers from even planting and now more than a third of the country’s
34 million people are in facing food shortages.
Kenya’s
government has stepped in and said they would sell affordable fertilizer and
cut the price of seeds to encourage farmers to plant for the upcoming season
but that won’t be until March.
