Andrew
Wyeth, the famous artist whose paintings often detailed the landscapes and people
of his hometown in Pennsylvania and summer home in Maine, has died at the age
of 91.
In
1948 Wyeth painted “Christina’s World,” considered by many to be his
masterpiece. The work depicted Christina Olson, who had been paralyzed from the
waist down, lying in an open field staring up at a farm house in Maine. The painting
now hangs in the Museum of Modern Art in New York.
Wyeth
remained popular throughout his life and earned millions for his paintings
which were often said to produce a melancholy feel due to their lack of color.
He
was presented with the National Medal of the Arts by President George W. Bush
in 2007
