AFC Championship Schedule: Pittsburgh Steelers Host Baltimore Ravens for Spot in Super Bowl XLIII

For the third time this year NFL season the Pittsburgh Steelers (12-4) will face the Baltimore Ravens (11-5) but this time the winner will get the ultimate prize, a trip to Super Bowl XLIII.

In their Week 4 meeting the Steelers need a field goal in overtime to knock off the Ravens while their Week 15 victory in Baltimore required a controversial touchdown in the closing minutes of the fourth quarter.

On Sunday the Steelers will try to make it three for three but it will take a huge effort as the Ravens have been clicking and have moved through the first two rounds of the playoffs allowing just 19 points. After starting the season 2-3 the Ravens went 9-2 with both those losses coming to playoff teams, the New York Giants and Steelers.

While the Steelers won both games against the Ravens it wasn’t because the Baltimore defense wasn’t dominant. Pittsburgh managed to collect just 69 yards rushing in the first game and in the second they rushed for 91 yards. If the Steelers don’t find a running game on Sunday they could be in trouble due in large part to Ed Reed.

Over the final six weeks of the regular season Reed collected eight interceptions and in the Ravens opening round playoff game against the Miami Dolphins he added another two picks to his total. Pittsburgh QB Ben Roethlisberger will certainly be aware of Reed but he can’t focus exclusively on him as the Ravens led the NFL with 26 interceptions.

Pittsburgh will have to establish some kind of running game on Sunday to open their passing attack and that means Willie Parker and Mewelde Moore will need to find holes.

For the Baltimore offense the game plan will likely be what it has been all year, just don’t turn the ball over. That hasn’t been a problem for rookie quarterback Joe Flacco who appears to have settled into the role of allowing his team’s defense to dictate field position.

Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. ET on Sunday.
