Prior
to Week 17 there were few, if any, who had correctly placed the Arizona
Cardinals (9-7) and the Philadelphia Eagles (9-6-1) in the NFC Championship
game. Heading into the final week of the regular season there were few teams
struggling more than the Cardinals and the Eagles needed a minor miracle just
to earn a trip to the playoffs. Now the two teams will face off for the right
to play in Super Bowl XLIII.
Arizona
has stunned just about everybody with the way they have breezed through the playoffs
thus far. A relatively easy win over the Atlanta Falcons in the first round was
followed by a blasting of the Carolina Panthers and now they sit just one win
away from playing in their first Super Bowl.
For
the Eagles, just getting into the playoffs was a struggle. Philadelphia needed
the Chicago Bears to lose to the Houston Texans and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to
fall at home against the Oakland Raiders just to have a chance, both happened,
and then they needed to beat the Dallas Cowboys at home, which they did.
Philly
has run with their opportunity and went into Minnesota in the first round and
knocked off the Vikings and then traveled to New York last week and beat the number-one
seed Giants to advance to the NFC Championship game in Arizona.
The
Eagles crushed the Cardinals 48-20 in their only meeting this year, a Week 13
Thanksgiving Day matchup. In that game Donovan McNabb threw for 260 yards and four
touchdowns while Brian Westbrook rushed for 110 yards and a pair of TDs. As
impressive as the offense was in that game the Eagles defense was just as
dominant, intercepting Kurt Warner three times while limiting Larry Fitzgerald
to just 65 yards receiving and Anquan Boldin to 63 yards.
Unfortunately
for the Eagles the team they face on Sunday has transformed itself over the past
two weeks into a shut down defense that has forced nine turnovers while their passing
attack covered 717 yards with Fitzgerald passing the 100-yard mark in each
game.
While
the Cardinals may be a different team they will still be facing an Eagles
defense that ranked number one in the NFC and allowed just 182 yards passing
per game. Trying to run the ball won’t be any easier for the Cardinals as the Eagles
have allowed just 92.3 yards per game.
Kickoff
is set for 3:00 p.m. ET on Sunday.
