The Orchid Recovery Center Joins Team Heifer to Fight World Hunger

The Orchid Recovery Center announced its Team Heifer online donations drive today in an effort to raise funds for hunger-relief organization Heifer International. With a preliminary fundraising goal of $1,000, the drug and alcohol addiction recovery center hopes to spotlight the issue of world hunger while mobilizing donations for Heifer International’s organizational needs.

“At The Orchid, we believe in the power of community in helping to assuage suffering and initiate social change,” explained The Orchid Recovery Center Chief Executive Officer Julie Queler. “Joining Team Heifer allows us to address the most basic needs women have.”

The Team Heifer program operates as an online grassroots effort, allowing “team members” to engage in creative, ongoing fundraising events within their circle of friends, business associates and relatives. Using a web-based interface, participants can recruit others via social networking tools such as Facebook and Twitter (follow Orchid Recovery on Twitter).

Funds raised through The Orchid’s Team Heifer program will benefit Heifer International’s unique hunger relief efforts, gifting vegetation and livestock to families worldwide. Heifer International’s program also provides eco-friendly training for families in impoverished countries, allowing them to impart training and offspring to neighboring families in need, in turn. As villages become self-reliant through agricultural commerce, local families can begin to focus on shelter and educational needs.

“Heifer International’s model demonstrates the power of recovery—whether internal or external,” added Queler. “At The Orchid Recovery Center, we’ve witnessed this phenomenon as our alumnae take the healing they’ve received and make a difference in the lives of others.”

Built upon Dr. Karen Dodge’s “relational growth” treatment model, The Orchid specializes in helping female survivors of trauma overcome drug and alcohol addiction through interactive, peer-engaged support. The addiction recovery program also leverages trauma therapies, health regimens and alternative treatments in combination with 12-step traditions as part of a comprehensive rehabilitation center fashioned exclusively for women.

The Orchid’s Team Heifer movement is among a litany of philanthropic efforts the drug and alcohol treatment center has launched in recent weeks. The Orchid’s fundraising efforts span a host of charities benefiting women, including the Susan G. Komen Foundation and the Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network (RAINN).
