Recognizing and understanding the personas employees use
during performance reviews is vital to managers being able to better coach and
push for increased performance from their employees, according to the latest
thought leadership paper released by
Kinetix,
the
RPO firm for growth companies.
“The 5 Faces Your Managers See During Performance Reviews” takes managers through the five
masks that employees typically use to challenge managers. Kinetix asserts that
moving beyond the age-old annual performance review and into a new methodology
that focuses on frequent and ongoing coaching produces better results, improved
employee performance, and a performance culture that helps both managers and
employees thrive.
One of the issues managers will have to overcome in using
the performance coaching model is that “no one has ever consistently told those
team members the truth related to their own performance,” explains
Kris Dunn,
chief human resources officer and partner with Kinetix, in the article.
Dunn goes on to explain the importance of teaching managers
to recognize
“The Five Faces”
managers will encounter when coaching for increased performance.
From
“The Diva”
(a legend in his own mind) to
“The
Upwardly Mobile/Unsure” (wants to excel but isn’t sure what they want in
their career), employees employ a few typical masks or personas as a defense
mechanism when managers request increased performance and results. By learning
“The Five Faces,” managers can then learn
the best strategies to deal with each while also allowing the employee to have
a degree of control over the coaching process.
