Illinois school undertakes asbestos removal while in session

By: Daun Lee

In a Carmi, Illinois high school parents of students were informed that the existing asbestos will be removed from the location. Normally this would be a relief; however, they learned that the removal project will begin while the students are still attending classes.

Removing asbestos requires great care as the fibers from asbestos are harmful to human health. When inhaled, asbestos can cause a range of illnesses which affect the lungs, most notably mesothelioma. The toxic mineral was widely used in buildings, including numerous schools, until the late eighties, when its use began to be regulated by the EPA.

The company who is in charge of the removal, EC2 Inc., has tried to reassure parents that their children won’t be affected by the removal.

Removing asbestos from a building requires great care; breathing in a small amount is detrimental to a person’s health. Disturbing any material containing asbestos can cause minute fibers to become airborne.

Asbestos is so toxic that over the past few decades many cities around the world work on removing it from their existing structures.

Asbestos is known to cause mesothelioma which causes cancerous tumors to grow on the delicate lining of the lungs. The aggressive cancer is treatable but eventually leads to death. Mesothelioma patients require intensive medical care and with the help of a mesothelioma attorney they can petition for funds from companies that use asbestos. The numbers of people who contract mesothelioma are expected to increase as the disease can take decades to manifest. By retaining a mesothelioma lawyer the victims of asbestos exposure can seek compensation from the companies that negligently used the toxin.
