The Tampa Bay Buccaneers fired head coach Jon Gruden on Friday, ending a seven-year run in which the club went 57-55 including three playoff appearances and a Super Bowl title in 2003.
Despite the playoff appearances and Super Bowl title Gruden struggled the past three years in which Tampa went 22-26. This year was particularly difficult after the team was 9-3 and needed just one more win to make the playoffs but dropped their final four games of the year and missed out on the postseason.
Gruden wasn’t the only one out in Tampa as general manager Bruce Allen was also dismissed on Friday.
In an announcement from Buccaneers Co-Chairman Joel Glazer stated, “We will be forever grateful to Jon for bringing us the Super Bowl title, and we thank Bruce for his contributions to our franchise. However after careful consideration, we feel that this decision is in the best interest of our organization moving forward.”
