According to past and present United States officials, Pakistan was warned multiple times that American forces would be sent to the country for Osama bin Laden if evidence showed the al Qaeda leader was hiding there. A national security official speaking on conditions of anonymity told Reuters the Bush and Obama administrations made their intentions clear to top Pakistani officials.
Pakistan has claimed they were unaware of the United States’ May 2nd raid in which bin Laden was shot and killed in a compound in Abbottabad. Many have speculated Pakistan authorities knew of bin Laden’s whereabouts, but did nothing to notify American officials. In a statement released shortly after bin Laden’s death, the Pakistani Foreign Ministry insisted the country was committed to fighting terrorism.
"Osama bin Laden's death illustrates the resolve of the international community, including Pakistan, to fight and eliminate terrorism. It constitutes a major setback to terrorist organizations around the world,” the ministry said in a statement. "It is Pakistan's stated policy that it will not allow its soil to be used in terrorist attacks against any country. Pakistan's political leadership, parliament, state institutions and the whole nation are fully united in their resolve to eliminate terrorism."
