GA college student becomes hesitant symbol of immigration reform

By: Daun Lee

Jessica Colotl inadvertently became a symbol of immigration reform when she was detained because in of her status as an illegal immigrant. She only shared her illegal status with a few close friends who protested her detention.

Cototl, a student at Kennesaw State University was very careful to obey all traffic laws when she drove, fearing that she would be deported before she could get her college diploma. She was pulled over last spring for a minor traffic violation and cited for driving without a license then sent to Alabama for deportation. She was held in a facility for 37 days. Her case was delayed for a year so she could finish school.

She has become a reluctant symbol of the need for immigration reform for both sides of the issue. Many immigrants who were brought here illegally by their parents as children look to her as a sign of hope. Groups who oppose illegal immigrants look to her as symbol of all that is wrong with the immigration system.

Jessica Cototl hopes to become an immigration lawyer.

Numerous young people are brought to the US illegally by their parents. To avoid the risk of deportation immigrants should apply for citizenship with the help of an immigration attorney. Living with the fear of deportation can be make life difficult for illegal immigrants, who would benefit from the naturalization. Achieving citizenship is possible by hiring an immigration lawyer.
