Russian and Ukraine PMs Meet in Last Ditch Effort to Resolve Gas Dispute

Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko are meeting in what is said to be a last ditch effort between the two sides to end a dispute centering on Russia’s gas supplies.

The dispute between the two sides no longer involves just the two sides but more than 20 European countries that are now facing an energy crisis as Russia has halted the flow of a large percentage of their supplies.

Nearly a fifth of Russia’s gas supplies travels through pipelines across Ukraine but those pipelines were shut off earlier this month after Russia accused Ukraine of siphoning off gas. Russia had already cut its supplies to Ukraine for failure to pay and refusal to sign a new contract.

Russian President Dmitry Medvedev has expressed optimism that supplies to the rest of Europe would begin in a few days but many European countries have been forced to look to alternatives for supplies as an energy crisis has led to rationing in several countries.

While the discussions between Putin and Tymoshenko are believed to be concerned with the supply of gas to Europe it remains unclear whether a new deal with Ukraine will be needed before the pipelines are turned back on.
