Three weeks after Israel began its airstrikes in the Gaza Strip the country’s cabinet appears set to approve a ceasefire and that would be followed by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert announcing the agreement to the nation.
The announcement will come on the heels of yet another night of heavy airstrikes in which Hamas targets were hit.
Israel had stepped up their attacks in Gaza following the first week of action as they pushed ground troops and tanks into the region in an effort to stop Hamas rocket attacks.
While Israel has stressed that the ceasefire was a unilateral agreement they also warned that if Hamas continued to fire rockets after the announcement was made then they would strike once more. Hamas has refused to agree to a ceasefire, saying Israel would have to remove their troops and lift a blockade before such an agreement.
There have been more than 1,200 Palestinians killed in the attacks and the Red Cross has said Gaza is facing a humanitarian crisis as a result of the conflict.
