Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai has returned to Zimbabwe to conduct new talks with President Robert Mugabe about a stalled power-sharing agreement that has crippled the country.
It has been four months since Tsvangirai and Mugabe agreed to a unity government but that plan has yet to be implemented due in large part to the President’s appointment of ZANU-PF ministers to key cabinet positions. Mugabe has since threatened to form a new government without Tsvangirai.
Under that agreement Tsvangirai was to become Zimbabwe’s PM while Mugabe remained president. Tsvangirai had actually won the first round of the presidential election last year but because he did not secure a large enough majority a run-off election was called. Tsvangirai pulled out of that election less than a week before the vote after declaring Mugabe had been using government forces to intimidate MDC supporters.
For the past two months Tsvangirai has been out of Zimbabwe, spending most of his time in Botswana due to his country’s unwillingness to issue him a new passport.
The political stalemate has left Zimbabwe devastated as several countries have imposed sanctions on Mugabe and his supporters. A cholera outbreak has left more than 2,000 dead while a large portion of the country lacks clean drinking water, sewage has flown into the streets and its health sector lacks medicine and supplies.
