Rebel Tutsi Officers Announce Ceasefire with Government Troops in DR Congo

Officers of a breakaway faction of Tutsi rebels have announced a ceasefire with government troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

The rebels officers had broken from the leader of the National Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP) Laurent Nkunda and the ceasefire could now put pressure on him to announce a full ceasefire.

The CNDP, led by Nkunda, has been involved in heavy fighting with Rwandan Hutu rebels in the eastern DR Congo since last August and those battles have carried over to include military troops loyal to the Congolese government.

Congo has said on numerous occasions that they would work to remove Hutu rebels from the region but those efforts have failed and Nkunda has taken the matters into his own hands, declaring he was protecting the minority community from further attacks.

Earlier this month there was a split in the CNDP with some officers favoring cooperation with the Congolese government while others remained loyal to Nkunda. Now those loyal to Nkunda will decide whether they will respect the new ceasefire with Congolese troops.
