Djokovic Extends Win Streak, Nadal Struggles at Italian Open
Djokovic Continues Winning, Nadal Continues Struggling
On Wednesday, Novak Djokovic extended his still perfect season record to 33-0 by defeating Polish player Lukasz Kubot 6-4, 6-0. Meanwhile, Rafael Nadal lost the first set of his opening match at the Italian Open and said he couldn't have played much worse.
"But it's impossible to play worse, so that's one good thing," said Nadal after the loss.
Nadal's 6-7(5), 6-4, 6-0 victory over Paolo Lorenzi marked his third consecutive time losing the first set of a match.
Djokovic could earn the #1 spot in the world if he wins in Rome and if Nadal fails to reach the semi-finals.
The Italian Open is considered by many to be a warmup to the second Grand Slam event of the year, the French Open, which starts in 11 days.
On Sunday, Djokovic beat Nadal on clay for the first time in 10 attempts by winning the Madrid Open. And now the pressure is on Nadal to maintain his #1 ranking and his dominance of the clay surface.
