Bynum Banned and Fined for Hard Foul; Barea Accepts Apology
NBA Player Receives Hefty Fine for Bad Behavior
Los Angeles Lakers center Andrew Bynum has been banned for the first five games of the next NBA season for a very hard foul that he committed on J.J. Barea of the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.
On Tuesday, the NBA also announced that Bynum will be fined a total of $702,272 for having committed the flagrant foul and for having taken off his jersey as he left the court.
Bynum issued a statement on Tuesday, saying, "My actions ... don't represent me, my upbringing, this franchise or any of the Laker fans out there that want to watch us and want us to succeed. Furthermore, and more importantly, I want to actually apologize to J.J. Barea for doing that. I'm just glad that he wasn't seriously injured in the event and all I can say is, I've looked at [the replay], it's terrible and it definitely won't be happening again."
During the Lakers' 36-point loss to the Mavs during Game 4 of the Western Conference semi-finals, Bynum elbowed Barea hard in the ribs as Barea was in the air going for a layup.
On Wednesday, Barea accepted Bynum's apology for the incident, saying, "I believe him. He regrets fouling me. He regrets what he did. I think he means well and it's just a mistake that can happen to anybody."
