Hamas Announces Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza

One day after Israel agreed to a ceasefire in the Gaza Strip the Palestinian militant group Hamas has done the same, possibly ending the three-week conflict that has killed more than 1,200 Palestinians and destroyed large portions of the region.

While Hamas announced the ceasefire they did stipulate certain conditions must be met by Israel for the ceasefire to hold. Hamas leaders are giving Israel a week to remove all troops from Gaza and lift their blockade to allow humanitarian aid, food and other supplies into the Gaza Strip.

Israel has already said they would exit Gaza when there was “a total halt to attacks by Hamas” but they gave no time frame in that announcement which could lead to problems in a week.

On Saturday Israel announced they had agreed to a unilateral ceasefire under the condition Hamas stopped launching rocket attacks into southern Israel. A short time after the ceasefire was announced Israel returned to airstrikes after Hamas continued their attacks.
