Kurt Warner was 21/28 passing for 279 yards and four touchdowns, Larry Fitzgerald had nine receptions for 152 yards and three TDs and the Arizona Cardinals defense forced three turnovers and allowed just 97 yards rushing in a shocking 32-25 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Championship game on Sunday to punch their ticket to Super Bowl XLIII.
Arizona wasted little time putting points on the board as Warner hooked up with Fitzgerald on a 9-yard touchdown toss on the Cardinals opening drive. David Akers managed to cut the Eagles deficit to 7-3 after hitting a 45-yard field goal but Warner and Fitzgerald partnered for a 62-yard touchdown in the opening minutes of the second frame to put Arizona in front 14-3.
The Philly offense struggled throughout the opening half and they had to settle for another Akers field goal to get within 14-6. Arizona’s offense didn’t suffer from the same problems as they answered the field goal with another touchdown and once more it was Warner and Fitzgerald as the one-yard TD pushed the lead to 21-6. Neil Rackers added a 49-yard field goal and Arizona carried a commanding 24-6 advantage into the break.
Philadelphia came out in the third like a different team as the defense shut down the Cardinals and Donovan McNabb got the offense going, finding Brent Celek on a 6-yard touchdown pass to cut the Arizona lead to 24-13 and then McNabb and Celek hooked up on a 31-yard touchdown to get within 24-19 after the extra point failed.
McNabb gave the Eagles their first lead for the game early in the fourth quarter when he hit DeSean Jackson on a 62-yard touchdown pass to give Philly a 25-24 advantage. Arizona answered though and drove the field and Warner’s 8-yard TD toss to Tim Hightower with 2:53 left on the clock put the Cardinals back in front and the two-point conversion made the score 32-25.
Arizona’s defense then held the Eagles and McNabb’s 4th and 10 pass fell short and the Cardinals chewed up the rest of the clock.
The Cardinals now advance to the Super Bowl for the first time in franchise history.
