A deadly earthquake struck the Spanish city of Lorca Wednesday evening, sparking fear in the area’s nearly 90,000 residents. Locra Mayor Francisco Jodar said “almost no one” slept in their homes after two earthquakes shook the city and killed at least 9 people.
"We have provided them with blankets, food, water and both medical and psychological attention," said Jodar. "It is very sad to see neighbors spending the night in the street. There is desperation and fear that there could be another seismological event."
The first earthquake, a 4.5 magnitude, was followed by a much stronger 5.1 magnitude temblor. Both were centered near Murcia and Lorca. Officials estimate around 20,000 buildings were damaged. At least 130 people were injured. Military rescue teams are already on the ground searching through rubble for survivors.
