Ben Roethlisberger was 16/32 passing for 255 yards and a touchdown, Santonio Holmes had a pair of receptions for 70 yards and a TD, Troy Polamalu collected an interception and returned it 40 yards for a touchdown and the Pittsburgh Steelers defense allowed just 198 yards of total offense in a 23-14 victory over the Baltimore Ravens in the AFC Championship game and will now advance to the Super Bowl where they will face the Arizona Cardinals.
Jeff Reed provided the only points of the opening quarter as his two field goals gave the Steelers a 6-0 lead. Pittsburgh extended their lead to 13-0 early in the second when Roethlisberger hit Holmes on a 65-yard touchdown pass.
Baltimore managed to cut their deficit to 13-7 before the end of the first half when Willis McGahee scored on a 3-yard run.
Both defenses came up big in the third quarter as Reed’s 46-yard field goal was the only points of the frame and the Steelers carried a 16-7 lead into the fourth. Baltimore seemed to gain some momentum five minutes into the quarter and McGahee scored on a one-yard run to get within 16-14.
After forcing the Steelers to punt the Ravens looked to have great field position but a personal foul set them back on their own 13-yard-line and Baltimore’s QB Joe Flacco was picked off by Polamalu who returned it 40 yards for the game-clinching TD.
Pittsburgh’s defense was dominant, collecting three interceptions, holding the Ravens to just 3/13 on third down and sacking Flacco three times.
