Bernstein Liebhard LLP Applauds FDA’s Request that Hip Manufacturers Produce Data on Metal Poisoning and Hip Implants

On May 6, 2011, the U.S Food and Drug Administration (“FDA”) ordered 21 medical device manufacturers, including Johnson & Johnson, Zimmer and Stryker, to conduct post-market analysis to determine whether their metal-on-metal hip replacement implants put patients at an increased risk for chromium and cobalt poisoning.  The FDA has recently faced increased scrutiny in light of the massive August 2010 recall of DePuy’s ASR hip implant,  a metal-on-metal hip replacement.  By requiring hip manufacturers to conduct post-market studies, the FDA hopes to gather accurate information regarding the potential risk of metal poisoning associated with metal-on-metal implants.  The lawyers at Bernstein Liebhard LLP are currently investigating and litigating cases on behalf of Bernstein Liebhard’s clients who have undergone DePuy ASR hip implant surgery and are offering free and confidential legal consultations to individuals who received the defective hip implants.

Detailed Information Requested by the FDA

According to its website, the FDA stated that “data from the studies conducted will enable the agency to better understand these devices and their safety profiles.”  Specifically, the FDA requested artificial hip manufacturers to provide detailed information on the level at which metal debris shedding from the metal-on-metal implants becomes toxic, how much metal the implants typically shed, and the side effects of metal poisoning, or metallosis.

Since DePuy was forced to recall the defective ASR hip implants in August, Bernstein Liebhard LLP has provided a wealth of consumer information concerning both the Pinnacle and ASR hip systems on its website, www.consumerinjurylawyers.com. If you or a loved one have had hip replacement surgery and have been implanted with a defective DePuy hip, you may be entitled to compensation for medical bills, pain and suffering, lost wages and other injuries.
