Uganda’s LRA Rebels Reportedly Set Crowded Church in DR Congo Ablaze

A church in the Democratic Republic of Congo, packed with worshipers holding a prayer vigil on Saturday, was set ablaze by Ugandan rebels from the Lord’s Resistance Army.

It is unknown how many people were killed in the fire but the church was said to be full when the rebels arrived around midnight.

The LRA has been blamed for a string of attacks that has killed more than 600 people since Christmas Eve. More than 150 children have been abducted by the rebels, a common recruiting tactic of the LRA.

Uganda, DR Congo and South Sudan have joined forces to counter the attacks of the LRA in what is being dubbed Operation Lightning Thunder.

LRA leader Joseph Kony has refused to sign any peace agreement to end the violence until he is assured arrests warrants against him and several officers are dropped.
