Retired Plumber wins lawsuit for asbestos exposure

A California jury awarded John Casey, a retired plumber, over $41 million in a civil lawsuit against the Kaiser Gypsum company Inc. The trial lasted 14 weeks, and it took the jury three weeks to deliberate the settlement.

According to the verdict, The Kaiser Gypsum Company produced wallboard and joint compounds that contain asbestos, the products were found to be defective. Kaiser Gypsum Company failed to include asbestos warnings on their products.

Casey was diagnosed with mesothelioma in January of 2010 and has been battling the disease since that time. He was a plumber in San Francisco from 1961 to 2001, who worked on many high rises in the downtown area. Casey was exposed to asbestos-containing materials and other workers who worked closely with the carcinogen during his career.

Asbestos has been known to cause cancer in humans for decades and according to testimony, the dangers of asbestos were known as early as the 1950’s. Asbestos exposure causes mesothelioma which attacks the lining if crucial internal organs.
