Border Patrol Agents Killed in Accident While Pursing Illegal Immigrants

Arizona authorities confirm two U.S. Border Patrol agents were killed Thursday while pursuing a group of suspected illegal immigrants from Mexico. Maricopa County Sheriff Lieutenant Justin Griffin said the agents died when a train struck their SUV near Gila Bend around 6 a.m.

The two agents, who have not been identified, were part of the Border Patrol’s Yuma sector. "This is unfortunate not just for me, not just for the Yuma Sector, but for the Border Patrol as a whole," said Border Patrol spokesman Kenneth Quillin.

"This tragedy is a reminder to all of us that whether they are facing down a criminal suspect with a weapon, or patrolling the highways and deserts, these law enforcement professionals encounter life-threatening dangers every day," Arizona Attorney General Tom Horne said in a statement.

The accident is under investigation.
