DREAM Act gets re-introduced to the House

By: Daun Lee

Senate Majority lead Harry Reid re-introduce the DREAM Act, which failed to be passed last December. The DREAM Act would allow any illegal immigrant brought here by their parents to achieve citizenship if they attend college or enlist in the military.

In December the DREAM Act failed by just five votes from Democrats. In an immigration speech in El Paso Texas, President Obama blamed Republicans for the DREAM Act failure. The re-introduction makes many have the opinion that Obama is attempting to gain the Latino vote for the 2012 election.

The Republicans are introducing a bill that would require employers to verify a person’s legal status through E-verify in the interest of cracking down on companies who hire undocumented workers.

There is doubt the DREAM Act will get passed because Republicans are the Senate Majority and many oppose the legislation. They believe it encourages people to come to the US illegally instead of becoming citizens.

There are an estimated 11 million illegal immigrant residing in the US, all of whom face deportation. During the past three years the Obama administration has deported 800,000 illegal immigrants. Deportation can make any future attempts at obtaining citizenship futile without the representation of an immigration lawyer.

The naturalization process can be complicated and time consuming without the help of an immigration attorney. Becoming a US citizen allows immigrants to participate in our democracy along with the chance to benefit from social programs. Hiring an immigration lawyer can help a person reap these benefits.
