The
nearly three-week gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine is expected to be
resolved on Monday as Ukrainian Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko has travelled
to Moscow to sign a gas price deal that will encourage Russia to resume gas supplies
to the rest of Europe.
For
nearly three weeks Europe has been hit by gas shortages as Russia halted flow
of its gas supplies through pipelines in the Ukraine. Russia blamed Ukraine for
failing to sign a new contract and then accused the country of siphoning off supplies
that traveled through the pipelines.
Russia
closed its taps on the pipelines running through Ukraine, leaving more than 20
countries to deal with an energy crisis. Many countries began rationing gas and
several were left without heat as the dispute between Russia and Ukraine mounted.
On
Saturday the two sides met and reportedly agreed on a new deal that would open
the pipelines once again. As part of the deal Ukraine would begin paying for
Russian gas at “European” rates beginning next year while Russia would pay “market”
rates for transporting gas through Ukraine.
Ukraine
agreed to pay for gas at the current “European” rates this year but will also
be given a 20 percent discount for keeping the Russia’s transport charge at the
2008 level.
