Zimbabwe’s
President Robert Mugabe and Movement for Democratic Change leader Morgan Tsvangirai
are currently holding talks in what is seen as a last-ditch effort between the two
sides to finally resolve a power-sharing agreement that has failed to be
implemented for more than four months.
Mugabe
has said he was unwilling to make further concessions to the existing deal
until the unity government takes hold yet Tsvangirai has refused to form that government
until an issue over cabinet appointments is resolved.
As
part of their power-sharing deal signed in September both sides were to appoint
ministers to cabinet positions but Mugabe quickly placed ZANU-PF ministers in
key posts, angering Tsvangirai who then refused to work with the president.
The
political stalemate in Zimbabwe has left the country devastated as several
countries have refused to work with Mugabe. In turn, Mugabe has made it
difficult for humanitarian aid to arrive in the country to combat food
shortages and a cholera outbreak that has left more than 2,200 dead. Basic
services have been left in shambles as the economy continues to tumble and
inflation hits staggering numbers.
Monday’s
talks, to be attended by the presidents of South Africa and Mozambique, could
result in a complete breakdown of the power-sharing agreement as many fear
Mugabe will go ahead with forming a government unilaterally an understanding isn’t
reached.
