Serena Williams Withdraws from French Open

Injured Tennis Player Will Not Play in Event

Serena Williams withdrew from the French Open on Thursday, as she continues to be hindered by her injuries.

The decision did not come as a big surprise because the 13-time Grand Slam singles champ has been sidelined for over 10 months now.

Williams underwent two foot operations and has struggled with blood clots but returned to practice last month and hopes to return to the tour this summer.

"While I am making good progress, unfortunately I won't be able to compete in Roland Garros as I am continuing to rehab my foot and recover from the pulmonary embolism," said Williams in a statement.

Williams added, "I am grateful for every moment I have and the fact that I have returned to the court. I am hopeful that I will be back competing this summer. Thank you all for your continued prayers."

The French Open will be the third straight Grand Slam event that Serena will miss.

Meanwhile, Venus Williams, who has not played since January, is reportedly in doubt for the tournament.
