Kenyan
teachers have begun a nationwide strike leaving more than eight million
students without lessons and forcing more than 18,000 public schools closed.
Teachers
opted to take part in the strike following the collapse of pay negotiations, an
issue that had already been addressed by the Kenya National Union of Teachers
and the Kenyan government. While an agreement had been struck to increase pay
for all teachers the government wanted those increases to be phased in over the
next three years, leaving many to fear that inflation would eliminate any
benefit from the structured deal.
According
to the secretary general of KNUT “the strike has been 100% successful.”
