Internet blamed for rise in prescription drug use

By: Daun Lee

A study conducted over a seven year period by investigators from Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Southern California found that states that the most expansion in high-speed internet services also had the largest admitted increases in prescription drug abuse.

The researchers concluded that internet pharmacies are partially the culprits. Many online pharmacies are located out of the country and don’t follow US drug regulations. The pharmacies often don’t require people have a prescription for drugs like Percocet and Oxycotin and their products can be easily ordered over the internet.

Although, rogue pharmacies make it easier to access prescription drugs they don’t contribute to people actually seeking drugs. Between 1995 and 2005, admissions to treatment facilities for prescription drug abuse increased by 300 percent. Prescription drug abuse is particularly prevalent because the drugs are legal.

Abuse of any drug is problematic especially on our streets. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 10 to 20 percent of car accidents involve people on prescription drugs, so DUIs aren’t just for people under the influence of alcohol. Prescription drugs affect a person’s ability to react in hazardous situations.

Whether a person is charged with a DUI because of alcohol or prescription drugs they will require a DUI attorney. In a court a DUI lawyer can work to reducing the penalties of drunken or drugged driving charge. Consulting a DUI attorney is crucial to a person charged with DUI.
