Last year a NYC detective filed a sexual harassment suit against her chief after he sent her sexually harassing texts with a Twilight theme. Bronx Deputy Chief Michael Gabriel was allowed to retire amid the investigation which angered Detective Dawn DelValle-Sanchez.
Sanchez has decided to sue the New York Police Department. She alleges that between 2009 and 2010, Gabriel sent her texts that referred to her as Bella, the heroine of the vampire saga Twilight, and referred to himself as Jacob, another character from the films. He is also alleged to have made unwanted comments about her body and her marriage in the guise of practicing his texting skills.
Sanchez feels as though the NYPD was more concerned with protection Gabriel than herself. Her suit also alleges the police department edited out sensitive information for her original complaint. She filed her suit yesterday and is asking for an undisclosed amount.
In the workplace many women and men are still dealing with sexual harassment, despite the efforts of activists, federal regulators and sexual harassment attorneys. A majority of working women have admitted in surveys that they have been victims of sexual harassment.
The instances of sexual harassment on the job or on our college campuses often go unreported, but with the backing of a sexual harassment lawyer, these victims might be more inclined to report their abuse. Sexual harassment goes unreported because many institutions try to cover up the problem instead of deal with it. Representation of a sexual harassment attorney will make our workplaces and colleges address this rampant problem.
