A 60-year-old British woman was beheaded by a man while shopping Friday in a supermarket in Tenerife, which is part of the Canary Islands. Spanish authorities say 28-year-old Deyan Valentinov stole a knife from the store and used it to attack the woman.
“The attack culminated with the decapitation of the victim. The attacker left the establishment with the head in his hand and then threw it to the pavement,” Canary Islands police said in a statement.
Valentinov was subdued by security guards while police rushed to the scene. It appeared to be a random attack. The motive remains unclear. The incident happened around 10:30 a.m. local time at the Valdes Centre shopping center in the town of Arona.
British officials confirmed the woman’s death and said the incident is under investigation. The victim's identity has not been released. “We are aware of reports of the death of a British national in Tenerife and are urgently investigating,” said an official from the Foreign Office in London.
