Harmon Killebrew Will No Longer Fight Cancer
Baseball Legend Ends Long Cancer Fight
Killebrew, 74, said in a statement, "It is with profound sadness that I share with you that my continued battle with esophageal cancer is coming to an end.
"With the continued love and support of my wife, Nita, I have exhausted all options."
Killebrew says that his cancer has been deemed incurable by doctors and that he will receive hospice care for his remaining days.
"I have spent the past decade of my life promoting hospice care and educating people on its benefits. I am very comfortable taking this next step and experiencing the compassionate care that hospice provides," said the Hall of Famer.
He added, "I look forward to spending my final days in comfort and peace with Nita by my side."
During his storied 22-year baseball career, Killebrew earned a myriad of honors, including 13 All-Star selections, an American League MVP title, and the Lou Gehrig Memorial Award.
He ended his career in 1975 ranked fifth on the all-time career home run leaders list and is currently ranked 11 on the prestigious list.
In 1984, Killebrew was inducted in the Baseball Hall of Fame, after having played for the Washington Senators, the Minnesota Twins, and the Kansas City Royals. His Twins jersey #3 has been retired.
