Green Bay Packers to Retire Favre's Number

NFL Team Will Wait for Right Time to Retire Jersey Number

Green Bay Packers president and CEO Mark Murphy announced on Wednesday that the Packers organization will be retiring Brett Favre's jersey #4, but they are just not sure when.

Favre is notorious for announcing his retirement from football only to announce his return shortly thereafter, so the Packers will likely wait a few years before they officially retire his jersey number.

"I think it's probably going to be a few years," Murphy told Packers fans during a tailgate party. "We made that mistake when he first retired after the 2007 season. Ironically, we were going to retire his number and have a big ceremony at the opening game that next season against the Minnesota Vikings.

"Little did we know he'’d end up playing that season for the Jets."

And even though Favre did not leave the team on the best of terms, Murphy believes that Favre deserves recognition for everything that he meant to the organization.

“Eventually, he'’ll come back into the fold," said Murphy. "He deserves that for what he did as a Packer. There are very few players in our history that had their number retired. ... But it's a very, very meaningful honor and we want to do it at a time when it’'s meaningful for both him and the organization."

Favre filed his retirement papers with the NFL in January and has announced that he will be starting a new career as a coach, a TV analyst, or something else. But the Packers will nonetheless wait to see if Favre's retirement is indeed final.
