Rafael Nadal Advances to Italian Open Semi-Finals, Remains #1

Rafael Nadal Wins to Keep Coveted Top Ranking

Spanish tennis great Rafael Nadal advanced to the Italian Open semi-finals on Friday by defeating Croatian player Marin Cilic 6-3, 6-1.

Nadal suffered from a fever during his last match but says that he felt better during his match against Cilic.

"Yesterday, all afternoon I had a fever, but at the end of the day I started to feel better," said Nadal. "I started the match with (more) intensity and I was able to move faster and play more with my legs."

Nadal would have lost his #1 world ranking if he had lost the quarterfinals match and if Novak Djokovic, the rising 23-year-old star from Serbia, ended up winning the event.

But alas, Nadal will keep the top ranking for at least another 3 weeks.

In his next match, Nadal will face Richard Gasquet, who defeated both Roger Federer and Tomas Berdych on his way through the tournament in Rome.

Meanwhile, Novak Djokovic has won his last 36 mathces and is considered a favorite by many not only for the Italian Open but also the upcoming French Open, which has more or less been dominated by Nadal for the last six years.
