Nearly
2,000 Rwandan troops have entered the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo to
begin a joint operation with Congolese troops against Hutu rebels.
The
eastern DR Congo has been devastated by violence between the Hutu rebels and
the minority Tutsi community. The Hutu leaders of the FDLA have been linked to the
1994 Rwandan genocide that left more than 800,000 Tutsi and moderate Hutus
dead. After the Tutsis regained control many of the Hutus fled to eastern DR
Congo.
Since
August 2008 more than 250,000 people have been forced to flee their homes as
violence between the Hutu rebels and members of the Tutsi rebel group National
Congress for the Defense of the People (CNDP) has raged.
That
violence has spilled over into fighting between the CNDP and the Congolese
government troops after Tutsi leader Laurent Nkunda accused the government of
not doing enough to end the presence of the Hutu rebels.
Earlier
this month the Tutsis agreed to a ceasefire against the Congolese troops. The Congolese
government once again announced they would take action against the Hutus and
agreed to the joint operation with Rwandan troops to meet that call.
