Elena
Dementieva survived a serious battle with Germany’s Kristina Barrois in the
first round of the Australian Open, needing three sets to advance 7-6 (7-4),
2-6, 6-1.
Dementieva
and Barrois need just over an hour to complete their first set as neither
appeared willing to give in. Barrois bounced back from the disappointing loss
in the opening set and easily handled the fatigued Dementieva but the Russian
bounced back in the third to take the match.
Dementieva
has yet to capture a Grand Slam singles title but has reached the finals at the
U.S. Open and French Open in 2004.
