Visiting
a UN compound in Gaza that had been heavily damaged by an Israeli airstrike,
United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon expressed outrage over the situation
and said he was “appalled,” calling the event an “outrageous and totally
unacceptable attack against the United Nations.”
The
UN food warehouse was left in ruins after an Israeli airstrike mistakenly hit
the compound during heavy bombings against Hamas targets.
Ban
not only expressed outrage over the attack on UN property but demanded
accountability as well, saying he wanted a full investigation to “make those
responsible people accountable.”
Gaza
has been left in ruin following three weeks of attacks launched by Israel. On
Monday it was announced that more than 50,000 people were left homeless while
another 400,000 are said to be without water.
Both
Israel and Hamas have announced a ceasefire but conditions apply. Hamas has
demanded Israel troops leave Gaza and that Israel lifts its blockade while
Israel has demanded Hamas end rocket attacks launched into southern Israel.
More
than 1,300 Palestinians have been killed in the three-week conflict.
