Barack Obama Sworn in as 44th President of the United States, Notes “New Era of Responsibility”

Barack Obama has been sworn in as the United States 44^th President, taking the oath of office on the steps of the U.S. Capitol shortly after 12:00 p.m. ET. An estimated two million people crowded into D.C. to witness the historical moment as Obama became the first African American to ascend to the nation’s highest office.

While being sworn in Obama placed his hand upon the Bible used by Abraham Lincoln during the 1861 inauguration and shortly after issued a 20-minute speech in which he addressed a “new era of responsibility” for America.

As part of that responsibility Obama reached out to all nations who sought peace, telling them they had a friend in the United States. In his delivery Obama assured, “We are ready to lead once more.’
